Gujarat University was established in 1949 as a teaching and affiliating university under the Gujarat Universities Act of the Government of Gujarat. Before this, many leaders like Mahatma Gandhi, Sardar Patel, Ganesh Vasudev Mavalankar, Anandshankar Dhruva and Kasturbhai Lalbhai recommended the formation of the university here in the 1920 and the university was established soon after India's independence.
