History of University of Mumbai

The University of Bombay was established in 1857 by the British colonial government in India on behalf of the Bombay Association. This university was made similar to the University of London located in the United Kingdom.


Elphinstone College in 1835 by the Faculty of Arts and Grant Medical College in 1845 by the Faculty of Medical was already functioning, later they were joined in 1857 by giving Bombay University the exclusive right to award degrees. Bachelor of Arts and Medicine was awarded for the first time by this university in 1862. Medical schools like Sindh Medical School in Hyderabad, Sindh also joined this university later. Cornelia Sorabji was the first female graduate of this university in 1888.


Until 1904, this university only conducted examinations, granting affiliations to colleges, developed curricula, and formulated guidelines for colleges developing curricula. From 1904 teaching departments, research disciplines and postgraduate courses were started and several additional departments were established. After India gained independence in 1947 all functions and powers of the University were reorganized under the Bombay University Act of 1953. The university's name was changed from Bombay University to Mumbai University in 1996.


Rajabai Clock Tower

The Rajabai Clock Tower, located in the Fort complex, was built in 1878 for the library of the University of Mumbai. The tower was built by Sir George Gilbert Scott on the model of the clock tower of the Palace of Westminster in London. Local businessman Premchand Roychand contributed to its construction and named the tower in memory of his mother, Rajabai. This tower is 280 feet tall with five floors.
